nConnect NW is free to participating students, and offers several programs that support student success in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) classes, and help students learn about STEM careers.
AP Mentoring:
nConnect NW gives students the opportunity to work with a mentor who is an expert in their AP subject matter. nConnect NW mentors work with a small group of students before or after school over the course of the school year. Mentors support students by offering:
-
Tutoring to help them prepare for the AP exam
-
Mentoring to support students' college and career decisions
-
Challenging activities to help students learn how the course material is used in the community and the world
BizConnect:
Students working with the BizConnect program will have access to a database that makes connecting to industry professionals quick and easy. The program makes it easy for students to set up career related learning experiences like:
-
Job shadows
-
Informational interviews
-
Mock interviews
-
Senior project advisors
The following schools are using BizConnect:
-
Camas high School (Camas School District)
-
Clark County Skills Center (multiple school districts)
-
Heritage High School (Evergreen School District)
-
Hudson’s Bay High School (Vancouver School District (Vancouver School District)
-
Kelso High School (Kelso School District)
To get involved with BizConnect talk to your school counselor. If your school isn’t participating in the BizConnect program that may change in the years to come.
BizConnect makes it simple to explore different careers in the STEM field. It makes completing graduation requirements and making a post high school plan easy to complete. BizConnect can also help students create connections to different companies which can make getting a job later a lot easier.
Individual Mentoring:
The individual mentoring program gives disadvantaged students the opportunity to work with a mentor. The students are matched with an industry professional who will help them:
-
Develop a career and education plan - help students get on track with a plan that works for them.
-
Complete STEM coursework - help students understand concepts learned in the classroom and how those concepts are used in real world situations.
-
Build a STEM professional network - link students to other STEM industry professionals who could help with training or finding a job.
Working with a mentor gives students the opportunity to work with someone who may be able to offer important information about how to get started in the STEM field.
“Very helpful. You can ask questions and get more individual help than you would in class. Also, your mentors can become very helpful people, adults you can trust and talk to.”—Student
